A háziorvosok képzettek a kisebb betegségek kezelésében, többnyire lehetővé teszik, hogy kórházi ellátás nélkül otthon helyreálljon.
Súlyosabb állapot diagnosztizálása esetén a háziorvos kapcsolatba lép a kórházi szakemberekkel, hogy mindig gondoskodjanak az ellátásról.
